Venkatagiri sarees or Rajamatha sarees.

Venkatagiri is a small town situated in Nellore district, Andhra pradesh state, India. History of venkatagiri sarees dates back to 1700s, during the rule of Venkatagiri, the masterweaver handcrafted these sarees, specially curated for queens, royal ladies and zamindaris. These sarees were purchased for such handsome amounts that the weavers could survive with that sum of money for almost a year until they got their next order. Exclusive designs were made by the weavers on special order for the upper class only. Much of a boost and encouragement given to these sarees, by the Velugoti dynasty of Nellore and also by the Bobbili and Pithapuram dynasties, back then.

Venkatagiri is famous for sarees, which are made from cotton fabric, one can see these sarees in two mediums, Venkatagiri silks and Venkatagiri handloom cotton sarees. Venkatagiri sarees has different varieties like, Venkatagiri 100, Venkatagiri-putta and Venkatagiri-silk, more appreciated and favourite among all is Venkatagiri 100. Traditional motifs such as peapock, swan, mango, parrot, gold coin, leafs, diamonds, bel and geometrical figures are very popular and are interspersed all over the saree, in the form of thread or zari. These Sarees are handwoven zari cotton sarees popular for their Jamdani style weaving pattern. It may takes 25 days for an expert weaver to weave one attractive saree based on heavy zari work. Venkatagiri sarees artwork is registered under Geographical Indication from Andhra Pradesh. Venkatagiri saree comes with usually six yard well known for elegant, very soft, fine weaving, light weight, durable, ribbon border and finecraftmenship. One of the exclusive feature about Venkatagiri cotton sarees is that, the amount of bold elaborate zari work which is being incorporated. A simple gold border is woven on the edge, while the pallu was richely brocaded with motives worked in gold, combined with thicker colored yarns worked in Jamdani technique. Two major communities Padmasali and Devanga are engaged in weaving profession. One can wear these sarees for hot weather and for grand occasions.   • First few washes do give for dry clean
  • If washing at home, than use good quality, mild detergent and wash dark and light cloths separately
  • If required one can starch cotton saree as well, best to use liquid starch
  • Once wash cycle is done, dry the fabric in shade to prevent the color from fading
  • Storing these sarees, keep away from naphthalene balls and other repellents in direct contact to these fabrics
  • Do not wring or squeeze the fabric
  • One can steam press and iron the fabric, in a medium-low heat
  • Since its natural cotton fabric, shrinkage will happen not to worry
  • Use padded hangers to avoid wrinkling your sarees

You call them as pet birds, the bird of love, best known for fortune-telling, these small little birds who are extremely friendly, many times repeating people’s words and phrases. As a child, I do recollect when I used to shop, I used to say parrot green not much of shade/tones or hues I knew those days and Parrot are called by varies names such as Tota, Kili, gini, Popata, Chiluka, tatta, shua and so on and it is considered as auspicious symbol having one.
Parrot motifs, many a times often used in couture designed for both brides and grooms and are prominently present in textiles from West Bengal, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan. I never heard of Patteda Anchu Saree before
Well, many of them are not aware of this weave in the same state, it's an irony. Lack of awareness and less usage leads to this stage. It was in the year 2016 I first saw the Patteda Anchu Saree and I was very impressed at the first glance, for its simplicity and minimalistic weave, no woven designs these characteristics caught my attention towards this weave. Being and brought up in Karnataka, I was just familiar with Ilkal Saree, Molakalmuru Saree, KSIC Mysore Silk, Banahatti Saree, Hubli Saree because my mother had these magnificent weaves, and she wore them very often. When I told her about Patteda Anchu Saree, she was astonished and happy to shop one...
