TALES 》 Chirala Cotton and Silk Sarees

A Coastal town, situated in Prakasam District in the state of Andhra Pradesh called Chirala, this town was also known as 'Kshirapuri'. Chirala town is renowned for handlooms. Years passed by, the town gained popularity for its excellent handloom sarees known for the softness and durability. The name Chirala means saree in Telugu and so eventually the name of the town got transformed to Chirala. Main occupation of this village is handloom weaving and paddy cultivation.

The weavers of Chirala produce, cotton sarees, seico sarees which are a fine blend of cotton and silk fibres and kuppadam(Gadwal type), Generally in Chirala they use 'Fly shuttle loom' is been used. Handloom fabrics of Chirala are soft and most comfortable to wear which suites all the climate, hand butta is another fascinating design feature of Chirala sarees, where colours are manually added in-between the zari design. This artistic lineage is carried forward by the weavers belonging to areas like Devanga, Padmasali and Pattusali community of weavers community.

Few sarees I happen to see, the blend of colors for saree lovers, the first saree summer yellow and bright red with bold ribbon border which carries heavy thread work weaving, the second one being fresh peach main body of the saree contrasting border magenta pink which carries silver zari, floral, fish, swans motifs and warli design on the pallu mind blowing. The third one is bright red the main body of the saree which has silver zari and gold zari one on top that's the border carried along with raw mango motifs, the pallu carries heavy floral butties. The third one rose pink main body of the saree with black border with flowing designs and small floral motifs and again a heavy Shevron pattern zari in the pallu. The last one was royal blue main body of the saree, parrot green border and pallu carries checks. Tribute to the hardworking weavers of Chirala, for there marvelous work of producing 6 yards of saree in a match box. One can also see Kalamkari printing on Chirala sarees that's the uniqueness of this saree. Chirala saree with heavy skill work may take two to four days to weave one elegant saree.

Fabric care:

  • First few washes better to give for dry clean
  • Home care, use cold water to rinse the saree, not more than 15 minutes, to avoid color bleeding
  • Use only mild detergents
  • Dry the saree in the shade(sun-exposed areas to avoid)
  • Turn the saree upside down before ironing it and than iron it

The beautiful floral designs and the rich pallu make these sarees attractive and gorgeous. The long border sarees have a contrast border and the traditional touch is their specialty. Indian textiles are rich in artifacts, Begampur is a small town in Hooghly district in West Bengal, the sarees woven here carries deep and bright colours. The economy of this place depends on textiles and also famous for dhotis. What reminds everyone when you say Bengal is handwoven cotton sarees and is the center for fine cotton weaving and these Begampuri cotton sarees are known for loosely woven light-weight and translucent and are extremely comfortable to drape. One of my vintage collection from Tamil Nadu is Kanchipuram Double Border Saree, it is a Beige color as you can see in the portrait and do check out for an overall look of the saree in my video of as well. It has that charm of subtle look yet gives that opulence. In a nutshell, I can say it's the best match for your temple wedding( muhurtham silk saree) gives that complete finish of that traditional look and feel with antique temple jewelry. This is my one of my wedding saree as well which I had shopped for which has a 'Double Border' the first border is bottle green in color with thread work and the second border is a blend of Zari( Gold, deep maroon and bottle green) as well. This saree credit goes to my dad since he selected this wonderful piece of art. When I go deep about this saree, the base of the saree has the emboss stamp a design(beige color) with leaf and other elements as well and when it comes to the pallu area it has Swan's bird motifs.

I never heard of Patteda Anchu Saree before
Well, many of them are not aware of this weave in the same state, it's an irony. Lack of awareness and less usage leads to this stage. It was in the year 2016 I first saw the Patteda Anchu Saree and I was very impressed at the first glance, for its simplicity and minimalistic weave, no woven designs these characteristics caught my attention towards this weave. Being and brought up in Karnataka, I was just familiar with Ilkal Saree, Molakalmuru Saree, KSIC Mysore Silk, Banahatti Saree, Hubli Saree because my mother had these magnificent weaves, and she wore them very often. When I told her about Patteda Anchu Saree, she was astonished and happy to shop one...

A small town called Shantipur, also called by Santipur, Nadia district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Santipur is famous for handloom sarees from ancient times, this place and surrounding region has been famous for handloom sarees. Shantipur sarees are also called by name Santipore saree. This place is famous for handloom sarees from ancient times and elegant designs inspired from nature and especially known for its superfine dhoti and handloom saree with jacquard design. In this place, they generally use 'fly shuttle' frame looms filted with jacquard invariably used in Shantipur. Graceful looking sarees have been granted and awarded GI tag(Santipore Saree). To weave double-sided design they use Do-Rookha technique, the front and the reverse side of the saree looks extractly the same.

Magnificent Pochampally saree is called by varies names such as Pogudubandhu or Pochampalli Ikat, is a saree crafted in Bhoodan Pochampally, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, Telangana State, India. Pochampally, the village was renamed to Bhoodan Pochampally. This small traditional handloom village magnificently showered and surrounded by hills, lush green fields, temples, Pochampally makes up for an exciting destination to spend one’s heart. This village is around 45Km away from Hyderabad.Telangana is one of the ancient Ikat weaving centers in India.Pochampally Ikat sarees was mainly popularized during 80's.Pochampally silk saree boasts of blending comfort and popularly known as tie and dye weave, one can see century old traditional looms here.
